SELKIE
Wildness
There are many faerie stories of beings who shed their animal skins
to
walk among humans. In Scotland and Ireland, Selkies are seals who take
off
their pelts which they then hide on the beach to become human. Always
they
put them on again at the end of the day to swim back out to sea.
Once a fisherman captured a selkie maiden by finding and hiding her
coat. When she finally found it many years later hidden in the thatch
of
his cottage, she quickly put it on and swam back to her people. Although
the fisherman now sits on a rock by the sea every full moon singing to
her
and hoping she will return, he has lost her forever. The only ones to
hear
his songs are a family of seals that often comes to swim around his feet
